Past, present and future
Ganymedes was formally established on 9th/18th December 2008 and so doesn’t yet have much of a history, but nonetheless, this is how it came to be…Prior to his departure from Maastricht to embark on an internship in Groningen as part of his study, Sean Smith asked RUG personnel whether an LGBT student association already existed in Groningen. Since there was no such association, Sean contacted the President of COC: Groningen & Drenthe and arranged a meeting to discuss the establishment of an association for LGBT students. Sean’s first meeting with the COC President took place on 18th November 2008, only three days after Sean’s arrival, and a date was set for the first student meeting. Posters were printed the following week and with the help of some COC volunteers, were distributed around RUG buildings. The first meeting took place at the COC (Boterdiep 46) on 9th December and some basic decisons were made. The second meeting took place at the COC on 18th December and Sean Smith, Nanne Epema and Dennis Mulder were elected to the positions of President, Secretary and Treasurer respectively. The name Ganymedes was selected (by ballot) for the association and the constitution was approved by all in attendance.
The starting-up process was slow, with few people able to help spread the word.
Present and future
Ganymedes has begun postering the RUG and Hanze buildings and is trying to organise postering squads to cover their respecitve faculties. We are busy organising events for this academic year and for the KEI. To get involved in any way or at any level, see this page for advice or contact a member of the Executive Committee.
